Democracy Trailblazers  Fellowship Program will offer an immersive 6-weeks of combined training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Designed for high school students aged 16-18 in the Birmingham area, this fellowship focuses on nurturing an understanding of the democratic process. The overarching goal of the curriculum is to fortify students' comprehension of the significance of voting and to inspire them to actively participate in this essential civic duty. This initiative is particularly vital given the concerning voter turnout levels within underserved communities. Research underscores that early engagement in the electoral process significantly contributes to the creation of committed and engaged voters in their respective communities. It is our firm belief that this fellowship will serve as a pivotal force in reshaping the voting culture within the communities we are dedicated to.

At the heart of the fellowship's intellectual underpinning is our meticulously designed curriculum. It encompasses an exploration of the Voting Rights Act, a comprehensive understanding of the functioning of the three branches of government, insights into the mechanics of Washington, and an unwavering emphasis on the pivotal role of voting across all elections. Furthermore, students will delve into the art of community mobilization to amplify voter turnout, particularly within marginalized and underrepresented communities. Every session will be skillfully led by luminaries in their respective fields.

The selection process for our participants is deliberate and meticulous, undertaken by adept counselors and mentors from our esteemed local public high schools. Each student who is chosen to partake in this transformative experience will be granted a  stipend, which they can utilize at their discretion.  It is our hope that this incentive will kindle an enduring enthusiasm for continued exploration in civic engagement and the realm of political science.
